Sian Hiscock - Wingscapes
EXHIBITION OPENING
12/8 17.30 - 20.00 @ Galleri Frihamnstorget
Wingscapes is a collection of pastel paintings on board, and stems from a life-long love affair with all things lepidoptera.
In this series Sian explores the abstract through the delicate and intricate world of butterfly and moth wings. The artworks pushes the boundary of traditional representation of insects, and captures the essence of shape and colour in a purposely enigmatic manner.
By isolating and magnifying tiny details of a wing structure, the viewer is invited to see where the line between reality and abstraction blurs. In this liminal space, the already transformative nature of the subject matter becomes something new, and the boundaries between art and entomology converge.
The powdery, pigmented nature of the pastel medium allows the viewer to capture the subtle variations and gradients found in these natural masterpieces, infusing the artworks with a similar vibrancy, and allowing a welcoming unpredictable mark making in the process.
From the subtle charm of a Swedish carpet moth to the exotic allure of a Madagascan sunset moth, this collection presents a diverse range of winged marvels. By showcasing both common and rare species, Sian celebrates the enchantment and diversity found in every corner of our surroundings.
